IPAF Training for Data Centres across the UK and Europe
For the past two years, CDC Group has placed a particular focus on supporting the principal contractors and subcontractors delivering data centre projects across the UK and Europe – bringing practical IPAF MEWP and working-at-height training closer to the teams who need it.
The buildings that keep Europe connected are designed around resilience. Their construction should be no different.
During delivery, a data centre is a high-density, fast-changing workplace. Steelwork, cable containment, ceilings, mechanical and electrical installation, fit-out and commissioning all create regular demand for safe access at height. Several trades may be working in the same area, access routes can change as the build advances, and overhead space becomes more restricted with every completed package.
Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) are central to that work. Just as important is the judgement of the people selecting, supervising and operating them.
That is why CDC Group has spent the past two years developing a stronger, sector-focused training offer for data centre construction teams. We support principal contractors and specialist subcontractors with IPAF MEWP and wider working-at-height training planned around real project conditions, real machines and demanding mobilisation programmes.
Training that understands the environment
Data centre work is not generic construction work. Operators may need to manoeuvre around structural columns, installed services, temporary works, protected equipment and other live work fronts. The machine may be familiar; the space rarely is. Effective training must therefore do more than prepare someone to pass a test. It should build sound habits: completing proper pre-use checks, understanding the limits of the machine, recognising overhead and ground-level hazards, maintaining safe separation, using the correct emergency lowering procedure and knowing when conditions have changed enough to stop and reassess.
The principle is straightforward. A trained operator should be able to make a safe decision when the easy decision is to carry on.
IPAF operator training provides a respected international standard for MEWP competence. Successful candidates receive the PAL Card, which IPAF says is accepted in more than 80 countries and regions. Formal operator training is only one part of the safe system, however. The HSE also makes clear that operators need familiarisation with the controls and operation of the specific make and model they are using. Site planning, supervision and the correct selection of equipment remain essential.
CDC Group brings these elements into the conversation from the outset. We help clients identify the right training route for the roles, equipment and work ahead – avoiding a one-size-fits-all booking that leaves gaps when the team reaches site.
Supporting principal contractors and the supply chain
For principal contractors, the challenge is consistency. A data centre project can involve numerous subcontract packages, each with its own workforce, programme and training status. A clear project-wide approach helps establish the same expectation across the supply chain and gives site teams greater confidence that MEWP users have received appropriate, recognised training.
For subcontractors, the pressure is often speed. New starters, replacement labour and changing work fronts can create last-minute training needs. CDC Group works with project and safety teams to plan delivery around mobilisation dates, shift patterns and the practical constraints of the site, helping reduce avoidable travel and time away from productive work.
Depending on the project requirement, CDC training’s support can include:
- IPAF MEWP Operator training for relevant categories, including 1b, 3a, 3b
- Dual- and triple-category operator training
- IPAF MEWP Spotter training
- Harness awareness, user and inspection training
- IPAF PAV (Push Around Vertical) training for the use of Peco Lifts and Nano Lifts
- PASMA mobile access tower training
- Project-specific working-at-height briefings and safety campaigns
The course mix is agreed against the work being carried out. The aim is not to sell the largest package; it is to make sure the right people receive the right training before access, competence or certification becomes a programme constraint.
Training where the project needs it
CDC Group delivers from its purpose-built training centre in Hemel Hempstead and can coordinate project-based delivery anywhere in the UK and across Europe, subject to suitable facilities, equipment and local requirements. That flexibility matters. Training near the point of work allows teams to learn in a setting that reflects the project, while central coordination helps contractors manage standards across multiple packages or locations. Whether the requirement is a single specialist team, a larger intake or a phased, multi-site rollout, CDC Group can build a practical schedule around the programme.
For European projects, we work with the client to understand location, workforce profile, site rules, equipment categories and delivery dates before confirming the training plan. This early conversation is important: local legal and site-specific requirements still apply, even where an internationally recognised qualification is used.
Competence that carries into the working day
The value of good training is seen after the course: in the quality of pre-use checks, the control of the work area, the questions an operator asks before elevating and the confidence to pause when the environment is not right.
Those behaviours protect people, plant, installations and the programme. They also support the professional safety culture expected on critical infrastructure projects.
CDC Group’s data centre focus is built on direct experience with principal contractors and subcontractors operating in these environments. Our instructors understand the pace, the interfaces and the need for clear, practical delivery. We are ready to support the next project, wherever your teams are mobilising in the UK or Europe.
