During delivery, a data centre is a high-density, fast-changing workplace. Steelwork, cable containment, ceilings, mechanical and electrical installation, fit-out and commissioning all create regular demand for safe access at height. Several trades may be working in the same area, access routes can change as the build advances, and overhead space becomes more restricted with every completed package.

Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) are central to that work. Just as important is the judgement of the people selecting, supervising and operating them.

That is why CDC Group has spent the past two years developing a stronger, sector-focused training offer for data centre construction teams. Training that understands the environment

Data centre work is not generic construction work. Operators may need to manoeuvre around structural columns, installed services, temporary works, protected equipment and other live work fronts. The machine may be familiar; the space rarely is. Effective training must therefore do more than prepare someone to pass a test. It should build sound habits: completing proper pre-use checks, understanding the limits of the machine, recognising overhead and ground-level hazards, maintaining safe separation, using the correct emergency lowering procedure and knowing when conditions have changed enough to stop and reassess.

The principle is straightforward. A trained operator should be able to make a safe decision when the easy decision is to carry on.

IPAF operator training provides a respected international standard for MEWP competence. Successful candidates receive the PAL Card, which IPAF says is accepted in more than 80 countries and regions. Formal operator training is only one part of the safe system, however. The HSE also makes clear that operators need familiarisation with the controls and operation of the specific make and model they are using. Site planning, supervision and the correct selection of equipment remain essential.

Supporting principal contractors and the supply chain

For principal contractors, the challenge is consistency. A data centre project can involve numerous subcontract packages, each with its own workforce, programme and training status. A clear project-wide approach helps establish the same expectation across the supply chain and gives site teams greater confidence that MEWP users have received appropriate, recognised training.

For subcontractors, the pressure is often speed. New starters, replacement labour and changing work fronts can create last-minute training needs. CDC Group works with project and safety teams to plan delivery around mobilisation dates, shift patterns and the practical constraints of the site, helping reduce avoidable travel and time away from productive work.

NVQ Diploma in Construction, it has never been a more important time to upskill yourself and your workforce.

With the CLC (Construction Leadership Council) decision firmly establishing NVQ standards across all UK.  Construction trades and with the uncertain times after Brexit, all the contractors will have to focus on obtaining a formal qualification for their already-skilled staff involved in the Construction Industry.

CLC’s decision: The minimum standard for skilled occupations is an NVQ Level 2 qualification relevant to the occupation plus a separate health and safety element.

What is an NVQ diploma in construction and how can I get it?

A National Vocational Qualification – NVQ in construction is a qualification designed for existing skilled trades in construction industry, which requires a formal qualification to attest their skills and expertise, accredited by Ofqual.

What’s the benefit?

The benefit of achieving an NVQ diploma in construction qualification in your specific trade/occupation in construction, is that demonstrates your competency and expertise across your role and it can also take you places. For example, the NVQ Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior Management leads to MCIOB (Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building).

All of these NVQs provides access to the CSCS Cards Scheme.

What’s the process?

You’ll be professionally assessed by one of our assessors which will, anytime convenient to you, come and see you at work, on your construction site, how you ‘outperform’ – you are not required to sit any formal exams.

We’ll tailor and agree on your assessment plan and dates prior to your site visits. Therefore, you’ll not be required to attend to any classrooms or workshops to achieve your goal with us.

Can I be assessed anywhere in the UK?

Yes. We cover nationwide and can visit you anywhere in the UK.

Can I pay for my NVQ in installments?

Absolutely. We also provide tailored payment plans for our candidates.

What happens if I cannot complete my assessment process?

You’ll be allocated a period of 12 months from registration to complete the assessment process and supply the required evidence to your assessor.
